What Makes a Hot-Spring Habitat “Hot” for the Hot-Spring Snake: Distributional Data and Niche Modelling for the Genus Thermophis (Serpentes, Colubridae)

چکیده

Knowledge about species’ distributions is central to diverse applications in ecology, biogeography, and conservation science. Hot-spring snakes of the genus Thermophis share a distribution restricted geothermal sites at Tibetan Plateau (T. baileyi) Hengduan Mountains zhaoermii, T. shangrila). Although suture zones these regions are widely covered with hot springs, populations only few habitats. Here, we use bioclimatic, topographic, land cover data model potential genus. Moreover, using logistic regression on field survey test whether hot-spring water parameters landscape features correlate presence or absence. Hot springs temperatures between 45 100 °C winter precipitation showed most predictive power. At small scale, our support relevance temperature occurrence indicate that also along-valley distance from site major river might influence species. Our findings contribute better understand factors shaping current will aid setting priorities applied biology for snakes.

The complete mitochondrial genome of the Sichuan hot-spring keel-back (Thermophis zhaoermii; Serpentes: Colubridae) and a mitogenomic phylogeny of the snakes.

The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of the Sichuan hot-spring keel-back (Thermophis zhaoermii) was determined in the present study. The genome is 17,322 bp in size, containing 2 ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and 2 control regions, similar to other alethinophidian snakes. A special 40 bp non-coding region, which was highly homologous to...

Hot Spring Metagenomics

Hot springs have been investigated since the XIX century, but isolation and examination of their thermophilic microbial inhabitants did not start until the 1950s. Many thermophilic microorganisms and their viruses have since been discovered, although the real complexity of thermal communities was envisaged when research based on PCR amplification of the 16S rRNA genes arose. Thereafter, the pos...

Hot nuclei at the Cold Spring

Biologists are used to the idea that structure and function are interconnected; they can relate the gross anatomy of a limb to locomotion, the organization of a mitochondrion to energy production, and the geometry of an enzyme to a catalytic activity. Therefore, they would expect textbooks and conferences on the nucleus to relate the vital functions like replication and transcription to the und...

Microbiology and geochemistry of Little Hot Creek, a hot spring environment in the Long Valley Caldera.

A culture-independent community census was combined with chemical and thermodynamic analyses of three springs located within the Long Valley Caldera, Little Hot Creek (LHC) 1, 3, and 4. All three springs were approximately 80 degrees C, circumneutral, apparently anaerobic and had similar water chemistries. 16S rRNA gene libraries constructed from DNA isolated from spring sediment revealed moder...

Virus silicification under simulated hot spring conditions.

Silicification of organisms in silica-depositing environments can impact both their ecology and their presence in the fossil record. Although microbes have been silicified under laboratory and environmental conditions, viruses have not. Bacteriophage T4 was successfully silicified under laboratory conditions that closely simulated those found in silica-depositing hot springs. Virus morphology w...
